GFG Industrial Services Limited

To support Coron Projects’ delivery, we collaborate with partner project managers and consultant planners. Their backgrounds add to the diversity of the team, giving us a breadth of expertise which we bring into all our client projects and observe project management best practice.

About Ed Percy

After studying at the University of Glamorgan, Ed began his career as a mineral surveyor, working at one of the few remaining Welsh collieries. As a qualified surveyor, he was on site handling engineering and technical queries. His degree gave him a breadth of knowledge across health and safety, mining engineering, land requirements, systems and site issues. However, he soon found that project management best practice went hand-in-hand with dealing with on-site engineering challenges. Affected by layoffs in the mining industry, Ed next joined geology specialist, Rockwash. As a natural progression deeper into project management, Ed ran a lab for geology sampling in Norway, taking responsibility for their projects and operations control. Once he left there, he spent another six years in technical project management before setting up GFG Industrial Services to work independently with his clients, in chemical production and engineering procurement construction (EPC).

Collaborating with Coron Projects

Coron Projects was seeking additional project managers and cost engineering support at a point when Ed was looking to work from home more often in South Wales. When he met Gerwyn to explore a potential collaboration, they shared a wealth of similar experiences from very different industrial backgrounds. Ed’s style is to stay calm even on stressful sites where the complexities of the design, construction or technical requirements need smoothing out. He steps in at a leadership level to solve and manage on-site issues or takes the reins from a planning and cost engineering perspective. His approach complements Coron’s values of being decisive and resilient. He says, “Most clients want me on board because I’m honest and don’t hold back when it comes to turning projects around. I know how to push even the most complex works over the line. Having a broad technical knowledge means I’ll absorb the project documents and figure out what needs to happen next. Working with Coron hasn’t changed my approach yet I love how we support each other and discuss the challenges.  Gerwyn is closer to the clients and commercial management side, and that’s highlighted how important it is to build great rapport with our clients’ key stakeholders.”

Project management best practice

When it comes to meeting the quality, time and costs constraints of projects, Ed acknowledges how excellence is key if you want to achieve all three. Too many projects run late or over-budget, then the quality is negatively impacted as the pressure mounts. Working with Coron Projects means you have access to a lot of experience and background knowledge to identify and solve problems very quickly.  The team provides a sounding board to validate decisions and affirm your opinions or find an alternative way forward. Ed sums up, “As project managers, we all take a pragmatic outlook to serving the clients’ needs. Having a wealth of experience as back-up means you can get traction quickly and it’s nice to know you’re not alone – with Coron, you can assess your skills and thinking with others who understand projects and quickly gain traction.”
